There is an ancient legend explaining the origin of the name - the Golden Sands. According to the legend, some pirates buried a huge amount of gold at the seaside to the north from the city of Varna. The land got back at the bandits and turned the gold into wonderful sand - the cleanest sand on the whole coast of the Black Sea. The Golden Sands represent the largest resort on the northern coast of the Black Sea occupying the area of over 1,800 ha. It is located 19 km to the north-east of Varna and in 490 km from Sofia. 100 m wide beach line of the resort boarders on spacious forest and stretches for 3.5 km. Cosy hotels, gorgeous bushes and trees, mineral water running through several large pipes right to the beach, specific microclimate and constant temperature of 27°С make the Golden Sands resort one of the pearls of the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea. Night life of the resort is extremely rich and diverse - in the town centre there are many night clubs, bars, and disco clubs. At the beach of the Golden Sands everyone can find suitable water entertainment: children water rides, pools, rent of hydro cycles, pedal boats, schools of diving, yacht and sea tram voyages, flying on a delta plane, banjo jumping, jumping with parachutes, water skiing, and many other. In 2003 the first Bulgarian aqua park was built here.

In the centre of the Golden Sands lovers of historical places of interest can visit the chapel of St. John the Forerunner, which was built under the patronage of the Most Reverend Cyril, the metropolitan of Varna and Preslav, and having got up to the monastery of Aladzha they can enjoy gorgeous sea view.
The Golden Sands are also famous for a number of interesting events held here: international festival of sport dance, tennis tournament, old-fashioned motor rally, various contests, and competitions. At the resort there are many restaurants offering various cuisines and different types of entertainment.
